I heard a few posts saying "a good tactic is to frost nova then blink away". For lazy mages, thats a great tactic. But a poor pvp one.
As a mage, you have 4 chances to get distance between you and your enemy. Obviously for casters, there's really no reason, but for rogues, warriors etc, by all means you should keep a good distance. Your first line of defense is blink. You can blink out of a warrior's charge/intercept, a rogues cs/ks, a druid's roots, and a pally's 6sec stun. So save blink to counter stuns and bonds. After blink, you have frost nova, which is useful as it is an aoe, so you can hit multiple targets- great for taking multiple pallies out of the melee range. Use it sparingly and NEVER frost nova then blink. Not only is that not mana efficient, but it is overkill and a horrible waste. So use the two abilities one after another.
Some tactics to keep in mind:
Vs rogues- I actually let them cs me, with my finger on the blink key. If you do it quick, they'll be confused and out of melee range, so you can either sheep em or start nuking them, spamming the instant casts. Beware of the frost nova => sheep, for they can vanish out of it and cheap shot you again while your blink is down = bad situation. Also rogues with preparation will vanish up to 2 times during a fight. These are the hardest rogues to take down since you have two spells, frost nova and blink, but they have potentially 3 cheap shots. Just hope for crits and take them down fast, or net them, use whatever the hell you got. The 2nd hardest rogue to take down is the one that ambushes/backstabs you. You will be so used to the cs that you might waste your blink when he opens with ambush and not cs. Frost nova and attempt to sheep. He will probably vanish when you nova and get ready for a cheap shot. Now you will be able to blink away, and hopefully sheep him again.
Bandage. Then nuke. Just pray to god that they dont have preparation, or you better start engineering now.
PS- If you have improved arcane explosion, use it when they vanish mid duel, this is good for preparation specd rogues and also druids when you know they're hiding, because there is no cooldown on arc explosion. I recently dropped it however, so i do not refer to it or blast wave throughout the rest of the discussion, though both are spells which possess great utility in their own right)
Priests are tough. Just try to get them down to 40-50% life, wait for them to heal themselves and then nuke, using all your instant casts, and hopefully pom fireball/pyroblast if you want any chance of taking them down. WOTF is another advantage you can get, making you immune to their fear. Also dampen magic, esp improved dampen magic will give you a better chance of outlasting them. In duels, any good priest will dispell you so dont waste time trying to recast it, as it doesnt make that much of a difference, but vs opposite faction, it can make a pretty big difference. Hope for crits and start hording shadow protection pots, as well as explosives/engineering stuff to use if they silence you.
Next is shamans- I usually spam scorch and fire blast vs them, casting lots of little damage is best because their grounding totems will absorb a few of em and it would be aweful if it absorbed a combusted pyroblast for example. As for their totems, if you try to take them out, the shams will just maul you, so taunt them out of range of their totems if you can. Then they will attempt to earthgrab totem you down, and frost shock or earth shock you to death. Another reason to concentrate on insta cast spells and spells with a low cast time- 1 spell every 8 secs will be interrupted. Keep your distance, stay out of totem range, and wait for them to heal around 40-50% health. Counterspell!! Then finish them with all your instant casts- eg fireblast, pom fireball and maybe cone of cold or imp arc explosion. remember you have 10 seconds so dont waste your mana for no reason if there are adds. BEWARE: nature's swiftness gives them an instant cast heal, so you might have to kill them twice, and if you waste counterspell on their nature's swiftness heal, you are done. However they will typically use it before their non instant regular lesser heal waves, so save that counterspell.
Warlock:
This can be a bit tricky if they are using the bus, and horrible if they are using felhunter aka mageeater. With bus, you need to hit WOTF BEFORE they charm you, and in duels, before the duel starts. they will typically open with a seduce, then 2 dots, then fear you, so when charm breaks, you will already be dotted and feared= GG. So... either sheep the lock and kill the bus, or hit wotf and try to nuke to death. They tend to have lots of hps however, and a healthstone AND a soulstone, so if you think it might be a long fight, its best to kill the bus/imp first because the bus deals decent damage, and the constant fireballs are a pain as well as the extra 420 life - 550 life that the imp gives. Remember dampen magic and remove curse macro. Those will save your life because a lock's dps comes from dots. Also you might try counterspelling a random shadowbolt that he throws your way, shut him down for a bit so you can concentrate on dpsing him. With mageeater, dont try to take it out, it'll just eat your buffs or dispell his and gain life. He can counter your spells, so if not dueling, RUN, and if dueling you have a few options: Net/frost nova the felhunter- a little less dps that the lock is putting out and he cant eat your buffs for 8-10sec approx. Concentrate on using mana efficient fast cast spells as well as primarily instant cast spells and moving around the lock so he cant target you. Good luck.
All the other classes are pretty easy. Not much to say on them except kite when you can, take them down low health with instant casts and keep them healing themselves either via pots or spells. Remember you can sheep/bandage or evocation if you want to start over, and hunters are best when you get within melee range, nova the pet and the hunter and stand in their DEAD zone. Beautiful
